This past weekend, I was thinking how different I would be if I was raised somewhere else. Yes, I would look exactly the same, but I would honestly be a completely different human being with a whole different perspective of life. And I am so so grateful. Alhumdulillah I did not grow up in the Pakistani village I was born in. Alhumdulillah for my father educating me here. Alhumdulillah for me having to study offshore for medical school. Alhumdulillah for all the experiences I had that enabled me to think outside the box. Alhumdulillah for the chance I get to hear different opinions about different issues and knowing that my opinion is not the only one that matters. Alhumdulillah for knowing that my opinion is not always correct. Alhumdulillah - this is a big one - for the ability to go through my day without judging others. Alhumdulillah for not being intolerant of other people’s customs and cultures. Alhumdulillah for the awareness that my role and place in society are not limited nor defined by my gender. Alhumdulillah for this life and liberty to be me, and not who you want me to be. It came at a price, but Alhumdulillah, it was well worth it.
