It only seems like yesterday we were talking about Glen Scotia and Highland coos – as you do. This photo completed our trio series of grey for @whiskylifestyle Back on it again with a different release. This 1992 26 year old, forms part of the Cadenhead’s commemorative shop release that arrived and promptly sold out in minutes. It is the way of the world nowadays. I’m tired of the scramble and virtual fight for a bottle, only to see many appear at auction shortly afterwards. I find it somewhat disheartening, the growth of whisky as a commodity and not as something to open, cherish and enjoy. My fondest whisky memories are bottles with friends or complete strangers. There’s no point talking about a favourite or closed distillery, if you’ve never formed a true appreciation by exploring and tasting its wares. It takes time and effort yes, more so a financial cost nowadays, but it is thoroughly worth committing to. Such knowledge and passion isn’t acquired overnight, or with a few mere clicks of a button. For me, it is a lifetime and something that keeps on giving. Back to this bottle. The staff at the various shops across Europe, were sent blind samples to pick their own release. For Edinburgh, they selected this Glen Scotia. Somehow, I’m not surprised given the abundance of Campbeltown residents that are on the staff pay role. Apparently, a close second was a Caol Ila, so they clearly like their peat as well. Glen Scotia was mothballed between 1994-1999 and in-between was helped by the Springbank team. When I think of Scotia I tend to drift towards the dirty end of the spectrum, particularly when faced with some of the big sherry bruisers that Cadenhead’s have released. Thick, chewy malts, these aren’t for everyone admittedly. In comparison, the official releases are a little more restrained and approachable. This release apparently lacks the dirty side that we sometimes association with Glen Scotia of this period. One to crack open with friends and explore soon.
@cosentinowinery#napa#lodi#chardonnay#grosjus#activin#cheers
