These two are growing so much. I can’t wait to have more hanging plants. That’s the bad thing I see my plants thriving and I want more! 😆 #plantparentproblems#planthoarder

I wanted to show y’all my first year valerian plant (Valeriana officinalis). These pictures were taken a couple months ago, so it’s a little bigger now. In the first year it grows in a basal rosette which is easy to see in the first picture. The second year, it sends up a flowering stalk which continues every year after. The flowers smell sweet and they’re an important food source to certain butterfly and moth species. The root is the part of the plant we use, harvested in the spring or early fall of the second or third year, and it is usually dried. If you’ve ever smelled dried valerian root, well.... it’s a unique odor! The more generous may describe it as “earthy”, but most might choose the descriptor “stinky feet”. And the stinkier the better, because as valerian root dries it develops isovaleric acid, it’s most active constituent and also what is responsible for the musky smell. Like most people, i find valerian to be a strong sedative. If i make a preparation before bed (here, i prefer a tea made from powdered root), it helps me fall asleep and it’s usually as effective as a sleeping pill for me. During the day, i can take a preparation if I’m dealing with anxiety (here i prefer tincture). Interestingly, there’s a small percentage of the population who can’t digest isovaleric acid- maybe up to 10% of people. These people may actually find valerian stimulating. In this case, fresh root would be more suitable. I’ve read some inconclusive research that valerian may carry a risk of liver toxicity. What is conclusive about this research, however, is that the potential risk is very low and quite rare. I wanted to mention this though, because if you have concerns or are battling liver disease i feel you should discuss taking valerian with your doctor. That being said, the risks are much lower than what comes standard with any prescription or over the counter pharmaceutical. I don’t have a concern with keeping valerian in my repertoire of herbs due to my issues with sleep and anxiety- it’s effectiveness has made it invaluable to me. I don’t even mind the smell anymore, it just lets me know it’s working ☺️

I know looks aren’t everything, but this one has them just in case ✨
Yup, I’m officially fed up with winter and can’t wait for spring. 🌱I’m fed up with being unproductive, just waiting for something to happen while hibernating. This winter is not fun at all and I cherish every day when the sun goes up and I can feel the presence of future better days (at least in terms of weather but also metaphorically of course). I’m not giving up or anything, I’m just a control freak who is going with the flow for a couple of months and is desperate without a proper full-time plan(I also really REALLY hate surprises so what does that say about me?). At least, all of this is teaching me how to plan less or not plan at all and that is a very useful experience. 🤷♀️ I can’t say that it’s bad, it’s just completely different from my previous experience and I’m not quite there yet. It will get better for sure.✨#winter#wintermood#sun#sunny#ficuselastica#sunshine#plant#plants#winterblues#urbanjungle#home#cozy#mood#moody#january#plantparenthood#green#greenhome#greenery
