In 1855, a British company, Richie Stuart Ltd., registered a textile mill in Gokak under the name of Gokak Water Power and Manufacturing Company Ltd. Two years later, in 1857 they set up a powerhouse to supply power to the spinning mills. In 1919 saw the registration of the company under the name of Gokak mills Ltd. Moreover, the company later combined with Forbes and Co. to become Forbes and Campbell. In 1957, the textile mills at Gokak were acquired by the Tata’s and presently the Gokak Mills are in the hands of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. Today, the mills are one of the largest exporters of cotton and polyester cotton yarn in India. Chances are that the H&M shirt you’re wearing may have originated in Gokak. The mills supply to overseas brands such as GAP, JC Penny, Migros, to name a few, as well as to Indian buyers. The mills are located near the spectacular horse-shoe-shaped (like the Niagara) Gokak Waterfalls at the point where the river Gataprabha drops from a height of 170 feet. The first ever hydro power production plant using a turbine was established on the Gokak Waterfalls to generate power to run the mills in 1913 . Where two distinct, diverse habitats coexist under the same climate is a Shola landscape, in the higher altitudes of the Western Ghats, along the Southwestern coast of India. The mountain crests here face frost, strong wind and heavy, unbuffered rain. They host a unique montane grassland, where Gaurs graze, Prinias holler and the chill fragrance of Lemon grass pervades. Down along the 'V's of the valleys, dense evergreen forests flow. Here the soil is deep and rich, trees tall and mossy, and streams are birthed where slopes merge. The soundscape too changes starkly. A different community of life is home here. Elephants, Giant Squirrels, Flycatchers, Hawk-Eagles, Laughing-Thrushes, Cicadas and countless bizzare fungi. The Grasslands and Forests form a rolling mosaic, a complex contiguous jigsaw-scape, spellbinding contours of colour, diversity, life and landform. ______________________ Pampadum Sholas, Kerala January 2019 #landscape#naturewriting#sholaforest#westernghats#habitat#edgeeffect#coexistence
